Medical Premises Consultants is calling on the Government to address the long-standing underinvestment in primary care

A healthcare property expert is calling for ‘urgent clarity and comprehensive support’ for the primary care sector following last week’s Budget announcement.

Rob Hearle, spokesman for Medical Premises Consultants, has reviewed the recent UK financial update for 2024/25 and is calling for additional support to address the significant financial pressures facing the NHS.

He told Healthcare Property: “The NHS budget for 2024/25 stands at £176.9bn, with allocations aimed at addressing immediate challenges such as elective recovery, COVID-19 vaccination efforts, and technology investments.

“While this funding is essential, it comes in the context of a staggering £22bn spending pressure primarily driven by higher-than-expected inflation and public sector pay increases.

“And, while we welcome the additional funding for critical areas such as mental health and social care, we must address the long-standing underinvestment in these sectors.

“The allocations for mental health crisis centres and support for vulnerable children are vital, but they must be part of a broader strategy that ensures sustainable funding in the long term.”

The budget includes a notable £4.1 billion allocated for day-to-day operational investments, which encompasses vital upgrades to primary care facilities and GP IT systems.

However, amid these critical infrastructure improvements, the announcement of a new fund to upgrade around 200 GP surgeries lacks the necessary detail for implementation or confidence, said Hearle.

He added: “We are particularly concerned about the lack of commentary on the specific plans for the 200 GP surgeries improvements.

“With ongoing pressures on primary care, being the gateway to the NHS, it is imperative that we have a clear understanding of how these upgrades will be executed and supported to ensure that they meet the needs of our communities.”

Furthermore, the NHS has earmarked £1.5bn for new surgical hubs and diagnostic scanners, as well as funding for radiotherapy machines and critical maintenance projects.

These investments are crucial for enhancing healthcare diagnosis and delivery and addressing the urgent infrastructure needs, yet, Hearle warns, they must ensure they do not overshadow the pressing requirements of primary care, if operated correctly, provides the best value for money for the NHS.

“As the NHS moves forward with its ambitious plans for capital spending and digital transformation, Medical Premises Consultants urges government officials to prioritise transparency and comprehensive reforms,” said Hearle.

“Ensuring effective use of funds is paramount to achieving the desired outcomes for both healthcare providers, workforce, and, ultimately, the patients.
