Michael Rea appointed chief executive of the Carbon Trust
Michael Rea has been appointed chief executive at the Carbon Trust, moving from his current role as chief operating officer to lead its work with businesses, governments, and financial institutions to drive positive climate action.
Rea has been at the Carbon Trust since its inception in 2002 and had a vital role in building the organisation, as well as designing and launching its work with businesses and the public sector.
He then led the policy and innovation team on areas including energy efficiency, offshore wind, fuel cells, and emissions trading.
As chief operating officer since 2007, he has overseen significant changes to the Carbon Trust, including moving to a self-funded business model.
He also led expansion into new markets, establishing offices in Europe, Latin America, Asia, and Africa, growing the business to over 400 employees globally.
One of the key priorities in his new role will be to spearhead a strategic review, ensuring the Carbon Trust continues to deliver increased impact in an ever-evolving landscape for driving climate action.
Rea said: “I am delighted to be taking on the chief executive role and to lead the next stage of development of the organisation, working closely with colleagues and our clients.
“Our mission has never been more urgent, and I am excited to get to work, collaborating with clients and partners to deliver increased impact and to accelerate their journeys to net zero.”
Julia King, Baroness Brown, chair of the Carbon Trust Board, added:
“The development and implementation of the new strategy will be pivotal in reinforcing the Carbon Trust’s reputation as an innovative organisation in the transition to a sustainable future while delivering tangible results.
“We are blessed with a wealth of talent at the Carbon Trust and I look forward to working closely with Michael as we accelerate and amplify the Carbon Trust’s impact on climate action.”
